2005: Is This the Way to Amarillo by Tony Christie

Composed by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield. First recorded by Tony Christie in 1971. The song is about a man traveling to Amarillo in Texas, USA to find his girlfriend Marie. The reason that Amarillo was chosen for the song was because it was the only place name that Neil Sedaka could think of that rhymed with willow and pillow. The song was to be titled Is This the Way to Pensacola, referring to Pensacola in Florida, USA, but Neil felt that Amarillo worked better than Pensacola. Originally the song reached No.1 in Germany and Spain, No.3 in Ireland and No.18 in the UK. Chart-History/1971/1972. When it was reissued in 2005 it reached No.1 in Ireland and the UK, remaining at the top of the UK Chart for seven weeks, placed at No.1 on the Year End Chart in that country, and at No.3 on the Decade End Chart. Genres: Pop, Schlager. The song was used in 2005 to raise money for the charity Comic Relief, with a video released that featured Tony Christie with various celebrities. Comic-Relief/IsThisTheWay.
